माझ्या घरी आलेल्या जनगणना प्रगणकाने मला माझी भाषा विचारली नाही. मुख्य म्हणजे, तसा प्रश्नच कुटुंबपत्रक किंवा जनगणनेच्या प्रश्नावलीत नाही. मग काय करायचे ?

येत्या जनगणनेत मातृभाषा व अन्य कोणत्या भाषा येतात ते विचारतील. सर्व भाषांची जननी संस्कृत आपल्या जीवनात शब्दरूपाने दैनंदिन आहे जसे - वायू, भोजन, गृह.. स्त्री-पुरुष-गाव-मंदिरांची नावे, स्तोत्रे, पाठ, मंत्र संस्कृतात आहेत. मग ज्यांची मातृभाषा मराठी, त्यांची द्वितीय भाषा संस्कृत म्हटले तर चालावे. संस्कृतला 'मृतप्राय' ठरवली असून मृत ठरवण्याचे प्रयत्न चालू आहेत. मागील जनगणनेत १४१३५ नागरिकांनी संस्कृत मातृभाषा नोंदवली.आता निदान द्वितीय भाषा संस्कृत नोंदवा हे आवाहन.
मे महिन्यापासून भारताचा जनगणना कार्यक्रम सुरू होणार आहे. जनगणनेच्या या प्रश्नावलीत प्रत्येकाला मातृभाषा तसेच अन्य कोणत्या भाषा बोलता येतात असा प्रश्न विचारलेला आहे. ज्यांची मातृभाषा भारतीय भाषांपैकी एक आहे, त्यांना कमीत कमी ५० % संस्कृत शब्दांचे उच्चारण सहजपणे करता येते, जसे - वायू, जल, भोजन, गृह, नेत्र इत्यादी. याचे कारण संस्कृत ही सर्व भाषांची जननी आहे. भारतीय लोकांच्या दैनंदिन जीवनात पडलेले संस्कृत भाषेचे प्रतिबिंब आपणास सहज दिसून येते. स्त्री-पुरुषांची, गावांची, मंदिरांची नावे संस्कृतोद्भव आहेत. आपली स्तोत्रे, पूजापाठ, मंत्र इत्यादी संस्कृत मध्ये आहेत. स्वाभाविकपणे ज्यांची मातृभाषा एखादी भारतीय भाषा आहे, त्यांची द्वितीय भाषा संस्कृत आहे, असे म्हणले तर त्यात काही गैर नाही. तृतीय भाषा कोणती लिहावी हा ज्याचा त्याचा वैयक्तिक प्रश्न आहे.

संस्कृत ही जगातील आद्य भाषा आहे. पण सर्व जगाने या भाषेस 'मृतप्राय' या श्रेणी मध्ये समाविष्ट केले आहे. भारतामध्येही असे प्रयत्न चालू आहेत. संस्कृत भाषेचे रक्षण झाले नाही तर आपण आपल्या भारतीय मातृभाषांचे रक्षण करू शकू काय ?

मागील जनगणनेत संस्कृतचा मातृभाषा असा उल्लेख करणारे केवळ १४ हजार १३५ भारतीय नागरिक होते, व भाषांच्या क्रमवारीत संस्कृतचा क्रमांक ११८ वा होता. संस्कृत भाषेची ही किती क्रूर चेष्टा आहे !

संस्कृत भाषेच्या उत्थापनासाठी एक प्रयत्न म्हणून येत्या जनगणनेत आपण द्वितीय भाषा म्हणून संस्कृतचा निर्देश करावा या साठी हे आवाहन !
