Interview Do's & Don't

When you are invited to an interview it means that the hiring manager believes you may be a good match for the job opening, and he or she wants to know for sure. The interview is used to determine whether you are qualified for the position. Also one important thing as the job seeker is, you should make use of the interview to determine whether you can be successful in the available position. 

o Arrive at least 15 minutes early; spend the previous day in the community if possible.
o Dress appropriately. Be businesslike, approachable, and confident in your appearance. No gum, cigarette smell, heavy scents.
o Do Offer a firm handshake make eye contact, and have a friendly expression when you are greeted by your interviewer.
o Do look the interviewer in the eye. 
o Do remember the interviewer's name and use it during the interview. 
o If you have to do a formal presentation, be well prepared. Inform the search committee/employer, know in advance of any computer/technical support you will need. 
o Take an extra copy of your resume and a list of references with you to the interview. 
o If you've worked before, talk about what you learned from it. 
o Do equip yourself with a strong knowledge of the company. 
o Treat other people you encounter with courtesy and respect. Their opinions of you might be solicited during hiring decisions. 
o Go alone. Do not take children or friends.
o Smile, be polite, and try to relax. 
o Be cooperative and enthusiastic.
o Take an extra copy of your resume and a list of references with you to the interview.
o Ask questions about the position and the organization, but avoid questions whose answers can easily be found on the company Web site. Also avoid asking questions about salary and benefits unless a job offer is made.
o Your ability to ask straightforward, insightful questions lets the interviewer understand your perspective and concerns, as well as your judgment and analytical ability. 


o Don't make excuses. Take responsibility for your decisions and your actions.
o Don't make negative comments about previous employers.
o Don't go to extremes with your posture; don't slouch, and don't sit rigidly on the edge of your chair. 
o Don't chew gum or smell like smoke. 
o Don't allow your cell phone to sound during the interview. (If it does, apologize quickly and ignore it.) 
o Don't take your parents, spouse, fiance or friends to an interview. 
o A job search can be hard work and involve frustrations; don't exhibit frustrations or a negative attitude in an interview.
