Civil Engineering-
Planning & Estimating Construction Project
I wish that as a young engineer starting out in project management I had had this
book. Experienced project nlanagers had their collections of data, and one could
always find books on the theory of project management; howcver, the data
available were often inconsistent, and there was rarely an explanation of what it
actually representcd. Understanding the theory is great, but it does not give one
the data and dctail required to actually manage, estimate, schedulc,o r contract.
In our contacts with plant project managers, we at FMC recognizcd that this
informational void still existed and commissioned Pablo Navarrete to fill it. This
book represents the result of that effort. In addition to committing his knowledge
to writing, Pablo has conducted many courses for our plant project managers and
found that this material is just what they needed.
Although real data are a unique strength of this book, the text also provides
theory and valuable guidance through checklists, do's and dotl'ts, and typical
problems and corrective actions. As novice project managers plan, estimate,
schedule, contract, and actually execute their projects, they will understand what is
important, the whys as well as the whats.
